Posted on 03/01/2009 by chris

The wedding is going to take place on May 2, 2009 in Dallas, Texas. There will be two ceremonies; the first one being the traditional Vietnamese Tea Ceremony followed by a Catholic Church wedding a few blocks a way. This will be the first time the families will have formally met.
TEA CEREMONY (LE VU QUY)
Start 11:00AM – 12:30
Location:
Jacqueline’s Parent’s HOME – Cuong and Yen Nguyen
1702 Morningstar Richardson, TX
Receiving the Bride at her Family Home
In a traditional Vietnamese wedding, the groom’s family arrived at the tea ceremony in a processional—led by the groom’s family—and organize themselves into a line. The men are all in dress suits and carry “qua”. These are gifts on carried on trays covered with red satin filled with gifts of tea, wine, fruit, jewelry and different kinds of food for the bride and her family. The gifts are symbolic of what the groom can offer the bride. For example each ones represents happiness, longevity, good luck, etc).
Serving Tea to Bride and Groom’s Family
The offer and acceptance of tea is a very important ritual in the Vietnamese culture. A traditional wedding is the only time in a Vietnamese person’s life that a formal tea ceremony is essential.
In a Vietnamese wedding, the Groom and the Bride will serve tea to their parents and relatives. Their parents will give their blessings, advice about marriage and family to the couple. Gifts and monies are given in red envelopes.
The bride wears a traditional dress called “ao dai” and traditional Vietnamese head-dress called “khan dong”

After the tea ceremony, the bride is considered to be apart of the Groom’s family. Another procession (without the bride’s family) is gathered to the home of the groom’s family for a second tea ceremony.
